About Gnosis

An EVM sidechain built around stable dollar payments and community-run infrastructure.

Gnosis Chain is a Proof-of-Stake EVM sidechain (formerly the xDai Chain) whose native gas token is xDAI, a bridged stablecoin. It is community-governed, has a large validator set relative to other EVM sidechains, and hosts long-standing DeFi protocols including Curve, Balancer, and Spark. Gnosis Pay, a MasterCard-connected debit card that spends xDAI, has given the chain durable non-speculative demand.

  • TVL in the $200–350M range through 2026 per DeFiLlama, small compared to major L2s but stable and organically driven.
  • PoS EVM sidechain with a large validator set (~100k+ validators via GBC Beacon Chain), gas paid in xDAI so fees are stable in dollar terms.
  • Hosts Spark (a live SparkLend deployment) plus Curve, Balancer, Sushi, and Honeyswap.
  • Gnosis Pay issues Visa-connected debit cards that spend Gnosis Chain balances, driving real payment volume.
  • One of only a handful of chains with a native stablecoin as gas (xDAI); avoids the volatility of paying gas in a governance token.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gnosis Chain an Ethereum L2?

No. Gnosis Chain is an independent Proof-of-Stake sidechain with its own validator set and its own Beacon Chain, not a rollup. It shares governance and design DNA with Ethereum but does not settle on it. Assets bridge between Gnosis and Ethereum via an omnibridge with its own trust assumptions.

What is xDAI and how does it work as gas?

xDAI is a bridged version of DAI/USDS that serves as both a stable dollar unit of account and the gas token on Gnosis Chain. Users pay gas in xDAI rather than in a volatile native token, which makes fee costs predictable in dollar terms — usually a fraction of a cent per transaction.

Why deposit on Gnosis for yield?

Gnosis carries small but sticky DeFi liquidity, and Spark's presence gives it access to the Sky Savings Rate on xDAI/sDAI positions. Yields tend to be steadier than on higher-incentive chains, and the low gas cost makes small position sizes economical. It is best treated as a specialized, stablecoin-focused venue rather than a scale play.
